Sweet Snacks
Their mouths watered and their stomachs growled hungrily as they each stared at their small collection of donuts. Back to back, neither knew the other was there, but they didn’t care and were solely focused on the tasty treats before them. Minako couldn’t wait to sink her teeth into the assortment she had, starting with her favorite – glazed.
The instant the confection touched her mouth, the sugar melted sweetly on her tongue and she could only manage an “mmm…” in utter delight of this brief escape from the reality of soon-coming exams. This was a taste of Heaven, and what a delectable flavor it was!
She quickly devoured the round sweet and began to dig in her box for her next victim when she heard something akin to sobbing coming from nearby. After adjusting her hearing appropriately, she realized that it was from behind her, and she turned around to meet the brilliant red back of someone she had not yet seen – she would never let such a brightly clad man pass her by.
“It’s terrible… absolutely terrible!” He wailed, rivers of tears pouring over his cheeks.
“Excuse me,” Minako said shyly, tapping him on the shoulder to direct his attention to her. The instant he whirled around, his tears stopped, for what reason she didn’t know, but that wasn’t important. “Are you all right? Can I help you with something?”
Stunned by the outrageous beauty before him, the words he had planted on his tongue vanished and he was left speechless, staring at this beautiful young woman the gods must have blessed him with. When he noted her curious and sincere expression, he quickly tried to sum up something to say, but clearly didn’t mention his present predicament. “Oh how the Heavens torture me, for this Venus before me is a thief of love and has thus robbed me of all words! Oh, the agony!”
When he finished his overly dramatic display, Minako giggled nervously, finding it strangely ironic that this rather crazy man had hit a certain secret right on the nose. Some people could be so funny… “Are you sure that’s the only thing you wanted to say?” She couldn’t help but prod, smiling in light of his praise for her undeniable beauty.
Blinking in surprise that this girl didn’t react quite the same way as most women did to his form of wooing, he managed a nervous laugh of his own and replied, “Well, besides your absolutely gorgeous self waltzing in this small bakery and causing my heart to beat thirty times faster than it should, I realized that in this collection of donuts they are lacking my favorite…”
That was it? He cried over one donut not being in his variety box?
“Oh, well what’s your favorite?” She asked him, perhaps hoping to appease him somehow.
“The cinnamon sugar ones…” he replied with a blush, finding it silly now that he acted so ridiculous in front of an obviously attractive girl. He was bound to set a record of some kind before he left this place – whether it be a good or bad record.
“I think I might be able to help you!” Minako cheered, turning around for a minute and rummaging in her box. Within moments, she had the object of his desire and held it out for him. “I like these, too, but you can have it.”
Touched by her generosity, he tried to refuse her. “No, I couldn’t take it from you. You keep it.”
Minako only smiled brighter and pushed it at him again. “But it’s your favorite, right?”
Women were shrewd, yet wonderful creatures, he mused to himself, finding a familiar sense of comfort and delight in this young lady’s actions. She reminded him so much of someone he knew a long time ago. “Well, since you won’t give up, how about we share it?” He finally said, offering up an enticing suggestion in the meantime.
She didn’t have to think twice about it and reached for his hand to shake on it. “Deal!” Her dainty hand met his black gloved one and they fit perfectly, both individuals blushing lightly, but quickly recovered as Minako began to divide the donut in half for them. “Hey, would you like to join me at my table? Eating donuts with friends is always fun!”
“That sounds great, thanks!” More than eager to accept her invitation, he snatched up his box and sat across from her, waiting for her to finish her “donut surgery” so that they could eat their treats together. Once she passed his half over to him and had hers in hand, they smiled and took the first bite of many more to come.
